Half
day tour visiting
Join our guide for an exciting insight into an era dominated by
neolithic man.
We start our tour with a visit
to the Tarxien Temples. Tarxien was the first temple site to be
excavated and it offers a unique collection of sanctuaries. Stone
idols and tablets, domestic animals carved in relief, altars and
screens decorated with spiral designs and other patterns, oracular
chambers and riches enhance the attractions of these temples. We
proceed to the south of the island and located in a rural area are
the temple sites of Hagar Qim & Mnajdra. These ancient temples are
particularly interesting. Hagar Qim has the largest and heaviest
megaliths out of all the temple sites around the Maltese Islands,
some slabs weighing a staggering 20 tons and the Mnajdra Temple
lies
tucked in a hollow in the cliffs, overlooking the tiny isle of Fifla.
The site is probably the most atmospheric of all Malta’s temples and
during the Equinox, on the 20th March and the 22nd September, the
rays of the sun pass directly through the temple’s main doorway and
light up the main axis. We proceed to the Ghar Dalam. The Ghar Dalam
Cave is a highly important site as it was here that the earliest
evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7,400 years ago, was
discovered. This huge cavern is some 144 metres deep, but only the
first 50 metres are open to visitors. The lowermost layers, more
than 500,000 years old, contained the fossil bones of dwarf
elephants, hippopotami, micro-mammals and birds. At the stage our
tour ends and we return back to your hotel or you can extend, see
below. |
